Jeremiah and Christmas Trees

Given that this is the Christmas season, and that the world will end tomorrow, I give you a passage from the book of Jeremiah. This is not the usual passage that is read in churches. The passage concerns the inappropriateness of Christmas trees. For those of you that want to verify that this is in the Bible, check out Jeremiah 10:2-4 (the King James Version).

Jeremiah 10:2-4

2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

There are those who ask whether I am serious about this. I don’t answer the question, but instead ask if it is in their Bible.

I am not experienced in exegesis. I will defer to the clergy and the theologians.

I know that there are theological issues. For example, what about artificial trees, or trees that are decorated but not chopped down.

Please understand that I am not condemning those who do have Christmas trees. I cannot convince my own household. I saw a Christmas tree in my wife’s shop on Subway Street.

PS: My wife claims that the tree wasn’t hers and now it has mysteriously disappeared! Hmmmmm maybe she’s finally taking Jeremiah 10: 2-4 to heart.
