Seven Dwarfs

Outside one of the antique shops in downtown Bisbee a joyful tourist was telling his friends about his great discovery – he had found a set of toy dwarfs. The dwarfs were bathtub toys that squeaked when they were squeezed. Not so surprising if the tourist had been a kid, but he was a middle-aged man. His only disappointment was that the set only had six dwarfs, not seven.

I ran into the guy and his buddies again later. They were trying to determine which dwarf matched to which name. This was complicated by  the fact that they didn’t know all the dwarf names.

[Confession: I didn’t know the names either.  This could mess me up in trivia games. I looked them up in wikipedia.

After looking them up, I am a lot smarter. In the original Grimm tale, Snow White, the dwarfs were not named. The 1937 Movie of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had these names – Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy.

The buyer and his buddies only had three/four right in this story – Dopey, Grumpy, Smiley (Happy), and Sleepy. The fact that there were only six dwarfs was probably because the 1991 movie had only six dwarfs.

Nonetheless I saw a guy who enjoyed fairy tales, and I learned that there are two ways to spell the plural of dwarf.
